Unexpected bills
Unexpected rises in bills were a concern for the Geological Society in the 19th century. The conserved letters reveal this memorandum to Council, written by the Society’s clerk George Roberts in February 1865, concerning the sudden rise in the parochial rates. The first the Society knew was a bill sent from the Strand Union. On questioning the charge, the Society was then sent the equivalent of a red notice and threat of a court summons!
