UK Planetary Forum joins the Geological Society

3 April 2025

We are delighted to welcome the UK Planetary Forum (UKPF) as the newest Professional and Scientific Interest Group of the Geological Society. The UKPF was founded in 1996 as a representative body for the UK planetary science community, with the primary aim to promote planetary research across all career stages.

The UK planetary science community spans a wide range of topics, including the geological, physical, chemical, and biological exploration of planetary bodies, reflecting the diverse range of scientific backgrounds within the community. Planetary science research is well established across the UK, with several large, dedicated research groups and many smaller groups based within non-planetary specific groups.

UKPF’s new status as a Specialist Interest Group of the Society, also affiliated with the Royal Astronomical Society, will allow for continued expansion of UKPF and provide an exciting opportunity to develop activities related to the Society’s Planetary Science strategic theme.

Membership of the UKPF is open to researchers in planetary sciences and related fields. The group run the annual UKPF Early Career Research Meeting and the biennial British Planetary Science Conference. Members receive regular mailings announcing events and jobs in planetary sciences.
