The 2024 Schools Geology Challenge is now open!
Our flagship student competition is back with an even bigger prize fund of £500
Our flagship student competition is back with an even bigger prize fund of £500 for the winning team to spend on geoscience learning in their school, as well as a trophy, a year’s membership to the Society and a certificate for every finalist. The challenge allows A-level students to showcase their knowledge, passion, and creativity and is open to geology, geography, and science students from all over the UK.
There are two stages to the challenge: the qualifier, and the final. In the qualifiers, entrants present a geoscience topic of their choice to an online audience in an engaging, informative, and inspiring way. The second round invites ten teams to our HQ in Burlington House where they compete in a geological problem-solving exercise for the grand prize.
Taking part in the Schools Geology Challenge encourages students to work outside of their comfort zones and gets them working with geoscience in the context of real-world examples to highlight the overlap between human and physical environments, and the vital role that geoscience plays within society. In addition, the challenge highlights the range of careers available in the geosciences, and illustrates a huge diversity of skills amassed through their study. Importantly, the finalists are judged by geoscientists from different backgrounds and careers who share their personal and professional experiences in geoscience with each of the students.
