Society Training Courses

Since 2021, the Society has run an increasing number and range of training courses to provide high-quality, technical training to Fellows and non-Fellows from a range of backgrounds, interested in advancing their knowledge of a specialist area. Training courses are taught by industry and academic leaders in their fields. The courses aim to provide training in specialist skills not covered in detail at university level and act as a bridge between academic knowledge and practical industry application. They target areas that our Fellowship and the geological community require for technical work, as well as introducing emerging themes.

In 2025, we are building on last year’s excellent offering with a diverse array of courses. Popular returning courses rooted in fundamental geology for practicing geologists include: the wonderfully named Potholes, Sinkholes and Washouts, Groundwater Control for Construction, and the Geohazards series. Exciting new courses include: Communicating Geoscience Through Illustration, Structural Geology, and Geoethics.

The Training Course Committee (a subsidiary of the Professional and Chartership Committee) regularly meets to discuss new ideas and proposals sent by external experts. We are always looking for new and exciting courses that quench the thirst of geoscientists keen to expand their knowledge. If you have an idea for a new course, please get in touch at training@geolsoc.org.uk
