To address the evolving needs of the geoscience sector, Keele University has launched a new Level 6 Geoscientist Degree Apprenticeship, offering a dynamic pathway for aspiring geoscientists by combining degree-level learning with on-the-job training. The university is proud to be the UK’s first and currently only provider of this new apprenticeship, hosting its first cohort in September 2025.

Developed via a collaboration between industry leaders and academic institutions, this apprenticeship aims to address the growing demand for skilled professionals who can navigate the complexities of our planet’s resources and environmental challenges. It will equip participants with practical interdisciplinary knowledge, skills, and behaviours essential for various geoscience careers. The 5-year apprenticeship leads to a Level 6 BSc (Hons) Geoscience qualification, with learning and assessment options tailored to the individual’s professional background throughout. Learning on Keele’s apprenticeship is typically delivered via a combination of online content and face-to-face ‘block release’ weeks, which include practical, laboratory and field-based elements.

The launch marks a significant milestone in geoscience education and training, and aims to play a pivotal role in shaping the geoscience workforce.

By offering a comprehensive, inclusive, and practical pathway to a geoscience career, the apprenticeship intends to attract a new generation of talented and diverse professionals to address the environmental challenges of our time.
