ES3 moves in-house

From January 2025, Earth Science, Systems and Society (ES3) will be published through the Geological Society’s own Publishing House

2 December 2024

Earth science plays a vital role in addressing today’s global challenges, from decarbonising our energy systems, to supporting food and water supply for growing populations, to minimising risk from natural hazards. ES3 publishes cross-disciplinary research and perspective papers that address these challenges and showcase the interaction of Earth science with sustainability and society.

ES3 welcomes timely and topical research across the full breadth of the geosciences

New start, new benefits

Following a successful launch in 2021, in collaboration with open access (OA)-specialist Frontiers Media, ES3 has steadily built a body of published papers. In 2023, the Society decided to move publishing in-house, following consultation with the Publishing House Team, Publications and Information Committee, and Editorial Board.

Publishing ES3 through the Society Publishing House ensures numerous benefits, including:

  • Better alignment with the Society’s international reputation for publishing high-quality content and delivering excellent service for authors, reviewers, and readers.
  • Inclusion in Society OA read and publish agreements, offering OA fee support for authors at participating institutions. Find out if your institution is signed up here: geolsoc.org.uk/open-access.
  • Personal service from Publishing House staff, who are embedded in the community. Day-to-day management of ES3 is handled by Abel Barral Cuesta, Journal Development Editor.

Representative, engaged, energetic

The Editorial Board has been instrumental to ES3’s development, led by Editor-in-Chief, Kathryn Goodenough (British Geological Survey), and Deputy Chief Editor, Jen Roberts (University of Strathclyde). Editors represent a diversity of career stages, subject areas, and backgrounds, and contribute to the journal in a variety of ways, including: handling peer review; leading thematic collections; advocating for the journal amongst networks; and contributing to discussion of editorial policy and strategy.

A full board listing can be found here: lyellcollection.org/journal/esss/editorialboard. We are expanding the board – please get in touch if you are interested.

ES3 Highlights

ES3 is proud to have collaborated on and published research across a broad and diverse authorship and subject coverage. Special issues have focused on topics such as ‘Earth Sciences and the Race to Net Zero’, ‘Sustainability in the Extractive Industries’, and ‘Inclusion and Diversity in the Earth and Environmental Sciences’.

Notable papers include:

  • Geoscience Solutions for Sustainable Offshore Wind Development, Anne P.M. Velenturf et al. (2021)
  • Role of Subsurface Geo-Energy Pilot and Demonstration Sites in Delivering Net Zero, Michael Stephenson et al. (2022)
  • Mapping Canada’s Green Economic Pathways for Battery Minerals…, Christopher J.M. Lawley et al. (2022)
  • Three Horizons for Future Geoscience, Iain Stewart et al. (2023)
  • “You just look at rocks, and have beards” Perceptions of Geology From the United Kingdom: A Qualitative Analysis From an Online Survey, Steven L. Rogers et al. (2024)

Sustainable open access

ES3 article processing charges (APCs) are kept as low as possible. Any surplus feeds back into a programme of discounts and waivers, which includes a 25% discount on APCs for Society Fellows and a full APC waiver for authors in lower- and middle-income countries through the Research4Life initiative (research4life.org). As a fully OA journal, ES3 provides authors with a sustainable and ethical publication route that is compliant with major OA mandates, including UKRI, Plan S, the UK REF2029, and the US Office for Science & Technology Policy.
