Annual General Meeting & President’s Day 2023

AGM 2023

The AGM will take place on Wednesday 14 June 11:00 – 12:30 (GMT+1) and will be a hybrid meeting.

Information on how to register to attend the AGM will be sent to all Fellows for whom we have an email address. If you do not receive an email or if you would like further information on how to register, please email agm@geolsoc.org.uk

Election results

The advisory ballot for Council, conducted by Civica Election Services, closed on 31 March 2023. The turnout was 19%.

A total of 2,228 valid votes were cast for President-Designate. The results were as follows:

  • Prof Michael Benton – 1,111 votes
  • Prof Jon Gluyas – 1,117 votes

Prof Jon Gluyas will go forward to the Annual General Meeting on 14 June 2023 for election as President-Designate.

A total of 2,116 valid votes were cast for the remaining four vacancies on Council. The following candidates all received 95% or more votes:

Dr David Giles
Dr Chiara Maria Petrone
Elizabeth Withington

The four candidates will go forward for election as Council members at the AGM.


Notification of Officers for 2023/2024

At the AGM, Fellows will be asked to elect the following members of Council as Officers for 2023/24:

President: Ruth Allington
Vice-President: Martin Griffin (EDI), Gemma Sherwood (Regional Groups)
Secretaries: Prof Jennie Gilbert (Science), Prof James Griffiths (Professional Matters), Dr Michael Kehinde (Foreign & External Affairs), Prof Daniel Le Heron (Publications)

President’s Day 2023

The Society Awards will be presented at a hybrid President’s Day on 14 June 2023 at 14:00 GMT+1.

Following the awards presentation, the research talks by four senior medallists, Prof Kathy Whaler (University of Edinburgh), Prof Peter Clift (Louisiana State University, University College London), Dr Mathilde Cannat (Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris) and Dr Karen Hanghøj (British Geological Survey), will commence at 15:30 GMT+1.

All Fellows may attend President’s Day virtually or in person. The links for registration are at www.geolsoc.org.uk/Events. Attendance in person will be limited to the lecture theatre’s capacity. For those wishing to attend the preceding lunch with the award winners at 12:30 GMT+1 or the drinks reception that follows, there will be a small charge.
